The story follows (played by John Cassavetes), a dangerous convict who escapes from a state penitentiary and seeks refuge in a remote farmhouse. He finds a young housewife, Mary Schaffner (played by Marisa Pavan), home alone while her husband is away. Cobbett intimidates her with a knife, forcing her to cook for him and help him evade the massive police manhunt.
