The family is safe, but as the sun rises, Anna looks at the puddle of water left behind, knowing that legends born of such deep sorrow are rarely gone for good.

In 1970s Los Angeles, social worker is investigating a truancy case involving the children of Patricia Alvarez . Ignoring Patricia's terrified warnings, Anna discovers the two boys locked in a closet for their "protection." When she releases them, she unknowingly frees them from a barrier keeping a vengeful spirit at bay.

Anna soon realizes that this isn't a simple case of child abuse, but a curse. La Llorona, the "Crying Woman," is the spirit of a beautiful Mexican woman who, in a fit of jealous rage centuries ago, drowned her own children to spite her unfaithful husband. Now, she is trapped in a cycle of grief and malice, seeking to replace her lost sons by drowning others.
