While searching the crime scene, Jane Rizzoli and Vince Korsak discover a man hiding in the bushes who attempts to bite Korsak. This witness, nicknamed "McGruff," is suffering from a psychotic break and believes he is a wolf. Maura Isles takes a clinical approach, nursing his wounded hand and attempting to win his trust to gain a statement that might identify the sniper.

The Boston Police Department investigates a series of sniper attacks in Franklin Park. The shooter is meticulous, leaving behind streamers to measure wind speed but very little forensic evidence. The first victim is killed instantly during a parking dispute, while a second victim, a stockbroker, is critically injured but survives.
